May or may not have spotted Shop Teacher on my way to work this morning. He turned left before I could get a good look at the driver, but how many black metros with Missouri plates and rusty hoods can there be in Chicago?

uofime, creepin’ on Shop Teacher

ETA: I sure hope no one spots me while I’m driving. I would hate to clean eggs off my car.

Ha! That was me!

As the blue WRX cruised by on the right, I wondered if it was you.

Ha, yes it was!

Wish I could have made it out to help you with the car last Saturday, but it’s good to see you got it sorted out anyway!

Lemme know!

Did you find snow tires for that thing yet? It might be a bit of a treck for the car but you should go ice racing in Wisconsin this winter, cause that car would be awesome for it!

I bet we can get Chris and Fourvalleys to get in on that too.

Ice racing would be a lot of fun. Snow tires are actually pretty good for rallycrossing as well. I haven’t even looked for any yet, but I have four extra wheels for it. Chris actually offered to go in on the snowtires, if he could drive it too. I may take him up on it.

Ha, nice!

Its getting to the part of the year where used snow tires are already going up in price, but there are lots for sale, so act fast!

What size rims do you have and what size tires does the car usually run?

I got out of your way as fast as I could. It’s only got 55 HP!

I’m going to have to make sure from now on not to pick my nose when I’m near work ;)

The stock tire size is 155/80/13, although I think I have two or maybe four 14" wheels for it as well.

This looks as good as it gets, I’d love to find narrower but they don’t exist. On the upside, they’re super cheap, at 200 a set!

Very cheap ... although I’ve gotta wrap my mind around paying more for tires than the entire car :)

True, but racecars are never cheap and tires are the most important part or any race car!

There’s two possible used sets on CL. There’s a set of Hankook studded snows up in Fox Lake that are the same size as those Generals you found. He’s asking $180, but they’ve been listed for over a month, so maybe he’ll deal on them .... assuming they aren’t gone before I can get up to Fox Lake.

Over in Wheaton , there’s a set of 185/65/14 Firestone Winterforces. The rear of the Metro right now has 185/70/14s on it, so I know those will fit. I have to dig through the extra wheels I got and see if there are two more 14 inchers in that stack, because he’s only asking $50 for all four of them.

Eh, those studs are tiny, the consensus lately has been that modern snow tire compunds with imbedded silica are actually as good as those old tires with the little studs.

I don’t know much about winterforces, but those look nice and meaty as long as they aren’t super old or rotted I’d say to pull the trigger on those cause its an awesome price! May be a little wider than would be ideal, but I think they’ll be great in the dirt and good in the snow if you end up using them for that.

Edit: the add swears they’re not old, but you know how craigslist is.

As long as they’re within the last five years, that’s good enough for me. If I have two more 14" rims in that stack, I’ll pull the trigger on those. The extra width is definitely worth the savings.

There are indeed two more 14" rims in my stash. The tires were as described, and the seller is an Oppo lurker. Very nice guy. Amazing how small this world is.
